Most frequent questions and answers
Travel Agents simplify your trip planning process. They provide advice and support before, during, and after your trip.
International travel, multi-city stops, customers’ specific needs, and travel delays or interruptions are all things that can complicate your time away.
Agents handle the hard stuff, such as airfare, transfers, car rentals, hotel bookings, travel insurance, etc so you’re able to focus on relaxing.
Travel agents are paid by airlines, hotels, & cruises when they book you. So, typically you’ll just pay for the cost of your trip. But this doesn’t mean your travel expenses are inflated!
Vendors have already built agency commissions into their fees, so when you book on your own you aren’t necessarily saving that money.
There are some cases where a small fee may be charged by a travel agent, most often for planning & research. These fees typically fall within the $100 – $200 range, and are usually applied to your deposit when you book your trip.
Yes, often times they can when you consider the added upgrades and amenities an agent may be able to secure for you.
There’s a big difference between booking a bargain basement deal through a discount site and booking direct through a travel agent. And some travel vendors don’t sell direct to the public, so you’ll need an agent in order to have access to their product.
It all boils down to relationships, and your travel agent has established relationships with vendors that ensure you’re getting the most value for your money.
The biggest benefit to working with an agent is the time & money they can save you! Itinerary planning can be time consuming and there are steps that are easy to miss, especially for groups, international, or inexperienced travelers.
They answer your questions, make sure you have the proper passport & visa requirements, alert you to any travel warnings, and provide expert advice about destinations you haven’t been to.
Absolutely! In fact, this is one of the most important reasons people work with an agent. The goal is always a seamless experience, but things sometimes do go wrong.
Your agent can help you navigate through any accommodation or flight changes, leveraging their business relationships on your behalf. When travel is booked through a 3rd party discount vendor, they become your agent so you would have to rely on their 1-800 number to help you out of a jam.
Travel agents work for you. They advocate for you and are a much more personal and effective resource than an online search.
Travel agents can certainly help you earn loyalty points and miles by booking travel with your preferred vendor, but they cannot redeem points or vouchers for you.
This would be an example of when booking on your own makes more sense (afterall, a travel agent can’t find a better rate then free!).
Your agent should always provide you with a side-by-side rate comparison so you can make the most informed decision.

*Established in 1968, Ensemble Travel Group is a member-owned and member-run organization of independent travel agencies in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Member benefits include unique consumer vacation products, the latest technology platforms and tools, and collaborative networking.
The ultimate goal of Ensemble (and indeed, every consortium) is to deliver vacations that consumers couldn’t get on their own. How do they accomplish this? By leveraging a global presence. Travel agents have access to more travel experiences, promotions, and suppliers than anything on the Internet. Use an Ensemble-member travel agent to access a robust selection of travel experiences to cater to your unique style and preferences.
It also comes down to high sales volume. Consortia can deliver huge volume, thanks to the large number of members. That provides incentive for suppliers to offer preferred benefits that are exclusive to consortia clients.
Ensemble is based in New York City, with Canadian offices in Toronto and Montréal; and an Australia/New Zealand office in Sydney.
